Also, be sure to make it fun and add your personality to it. Then your subscribers will enjoy reading it and get to know you at the same time.

2) Make It Easy to Subscribe - To maximize your newsletter sign-ups, you must also have a quick and easy way for people to subscribe to it. The best way to do this is to put a simple form on the top part of the left hand column of your websites home page, and all other pages, if possible. The winners may be pleased, but the losers will feel short-changed - and so the conflicts may intensify, with yesterday's winners possibly becoming tomorrow's losers.

Politics, which is often about rewarding some and punishing others, may become more so. Nor is this prospect merely theoretical. Already, Americans face far more claims on their incomes than can be easily met.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Clocks spring ahead and fall back when adjusting in and out of daylight saving time. A study published on Wednesday finds that heart attack rates do the same. The research, based on heart attacks in Sweden, concluded that the chance of a heart attack goes up during the first three weekdays after the springtime shift to daylight saving time, possibly because of sleep deprivation.

But on the autumn Monday after clocks go back and people can get an extra hour of shuteye, the heart attack risk declines. "Our data suggest that vulnerable people might benefit from avoiding sudden changes in their biologic rhythms," said Drs. Imre Janszky of the Karolinska Institute and Rickard Ljung of the National Board of Health and Welfare, both in Stockholm.

In a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, they said the culprit may be the one hour of sleep lost in the spring, when the clocks are shifted ahead. "The earlier wake-up times on the first workday of the week and the consequent minor sleep deprivation can be hypothesized to have an adverse cardiovascular effect on some people. This effect would be less pronounced with the transition out of daylight saving time, since it allows for additional sleep," they wrote.
The protective effect in the fall may last for just one day because, "Monday is the day when most of us will use this extra hour," Janszky said by e-mail.
During the shift to daylight saving time, women seemed more vulnerable to heart attacks than men. Men were more likely to be protected during the Monday in the autumn, the researchers said. They also found that the effect was more pronounced in people under age 65.

Janszky said younger people may be affected more because they tend to be working and their schedules are not as flexible. "Retired people are more independent from the official time," the researcher said. More than 1.5 billion people worldwide live in countries that use daylight saving time.

DALLAS - Texas farmers are once again battling armyworms and the voracious creatures are attacking fields and pastures in formidable numbers. "There are probably more armyworms this year than in previous years," Allen Knutson, an entomologist with the Texas A&M University System, said Thursday. The armyworm, which is actually the caterpillar or larva of the night-flying moth, do the most damage in the fall, when they're at their peak, nearly fully grown at about an inch-and-a-half long. They'll chomp on any plant, but prefer grasses, especially the lush and well-fertilized hay meadows and pastures in North, East and Central Texas.

"Unless the farmer is looking very closely, he won't realize he has a problem" until it's too late, Knutson said. "Almost overnight a field can be consumed by armyworms. A farmer drives by and says 'Oh my goodness, I've lost my crop. The armyworm gets its name from its method of operation. The larvae occur in large army-like numbers and when they eat all the food in one area they "march" en masse, across roads and fence lines, to the next field for feeding, unseen in the darkness and cool of the night."

"When small, they eat very little," Knutson said. "But after 10 days to two weeks, they turn into eating machines." He said armyworms consume about 80 percent of all the food they will eat in the last two to three days of their 30-day life cycle as a caterpillar. The cool temperatures in the fall and generally higher rainfall are favorable for armyworm outbreaks.

Brian Betts, who farms about 1,000 acres in East Texas for his beef cattle, has already been plagued with two generations of armyworms this year and fears a third infestation. "We're checking every day because we've got oats and wheat planted," Betts said. "If they get in there, they'll destroy it. ... Catching them early is the key." Pesticides are an effective counterattack, extension agents say, though it's possible to spend more on chemical controls then the pasture or harvest of hay is worth. Betts said if he loses his current crop he'll have to depend on grain and hay to get his cattle through the winter.

The moths hibernate or winter in South Texas, then fly north in the spring and summer by the millions, looking for the perfect field to lay their eggs. "One moth can lay 2,000 eggs," said Kenny Rollins, an extension agent in northeast Texas, adding that the armyworms showed up earlier than in past years. "Every year, Mother Nature throws us a curve. When it's wet, we have disease and fungal problems. When it's dry, grasshopper problems." This year, there was enough moisture early in the season to draw more armyworms, Rollins said. They'll devour winter pastures until the first freeze.

Mervyns, the California-based department store that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July, announced Friday that it planned to hold going-out-of-business sales at its remaining 149 locations. The move comes after Linens ’n Things, the home goods retailer that filed for bankruptcy protection in the spring, announced on Tuesday its own plans to liquidate.

The collapse of the chains comes after a dismal back-to-school shopping season — generally the most important time of the year for retailers next to Christmas — that has left the retail industry reeling. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that retail sales sank 1.2 percent last month. Unable to return Mervyns to profitability, company executives, along with the board, decided that going-out-of-business sales during Christmas would be the best way to drive traffic to the stores and pay creditors.

DES MOINES, Iowa – After failing to finish a reading assignment, 8-year-old Isabel Loeffler was sent to the school's time-out room — a converted storage area under a staircase — where she was left alone for three hours. The autistic Iowa girl wet herself before she was finally allowed to leave.

Appalled, her parents removed her from the school district and filed a lawsuit. Some educators say time-out rooms are being used with increased frequency to discipline children with behavioral disorders. And the time outs are probably doing more harm than good, they add.

"It really is a form of abuse," said Ken Merrell, head of the Department for Special Education and Clinical Sciences at the University of Oregon. "It's going to do nothing to change the behavior. You're using it as an isolation booth." Segregating children removes them from the positive aspect of the classroom and highlights that they're different from other children, said Stephen Camarata, director of the Kennedy Center for Behavioral Research at Vanderbilt University. And isolating an autistic child might be particularly counterproductive.

"They don't like being around other people so they might increase their negative behavior because they view it a reward," he said. Though there is no data on the use of time-out rooms, Camarata speculates that they've become widespread as schools confronted a growing enrollment of children with behavior disorders. "I believe it's because classrooms are much less flexible with more focus on compliance," he said.

The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund in Berkeley, Calif., receives calls from parents across the country who complain about time-out rooms, said Cheryl Theis, an education advocate for the organization. "Parents call and say their child's disability has been exacerbated by this and are traumatized by this," she said.
Merrell said he's encountered time-out rooms he felt were unsafe.

Students participated as audience members in one of three versions of a live debate. In one version, the nonspeaking debater remained "stone faced" during her opponent's speech, while in the other two she displayed either occasional or nearly constant nonverbal disagreement. Because this is a movie, he also manages to catch the eyes of both Kirsten Dunst and Megan Fox.

The Bigger Picture: Loosely based on the real-life experiences of British journalist Toby Young and his clumsy attempt to fit in on staff at Vanity Fair, Robert B. Weide's film changes the protagonist's first name to Sidney, with Jeff Bridges as Graydon Carter stand-in Clayton Harding, an eccentric boss not unlike a less homicidal version of his Iron Man villain (Irony Man, perhaps?). When Young's satirical U.K. paper is on the verge of utter collapse, Harding calls him out of the blue to offer him a job, despite or possibly because of the fact that the paper had recently made Harding a target of its barbs.

Still, despite the contrived story arc, it's undeniably fun to watch someone onscreen endlessly get away with irritating the bosses in ways most of us only wish we could. And while the story may not entirely resemble the real Toby Young's actual experiences, the oft-overrated Pegg is actually a perfect choice to portray him in all his sarcastic yet sensitive, um, glory. "I'm pleased everything is going smoothly. It's looking great and they are starting off on a fascinating new adventure," he told The Associated Press. "There was not a lot of nervousness today or during the launch. We were confident it would go well," he said.

Also aboard were U.S. astronaut Michael Fincke and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov. They will replace the station's current crew and spend several months in orbit.

Remember those old televisions? When a TV repairman came out to fix a problem, he most likely would have to take the picture tube out, which amounted to the entire television minus the cabinet in which it is bolted. I remember a time when that happened in our house. The picture tube was to be repaired at the repairman's shop and brought back on a later date.

Mother spent the next two days making a special effort to keep my siblings and me away from the cabinet where the wires were hanging and the bolts were lying around. You know how destructive seven little children can be.

A couple of days later, mother needed to make a trip to town to buy groceries, so dad came in from his farm work to watch us. What a treat that was for us, we always had lots of fun when dad was in charge.

After a little horseplay and joking around, dad said he wanted to watch TV. We proceeded to remind him "the TV is broke." Dad said he didn't see why that should keep him from watching TV. He then allowed us to each take a turn getting into the cabinet and entertaining him.

James was our best comedian and entertained us with his jokes and his self-made songs. Then, we had a news report followed by a weather report. I loved the Big Hit Parade that we watched weekly, so I sang a new song for my part of the entertainment. Three of the boys crowded into the cabinet and made a very good stand-in for the Three Stooges. We continued for quite some time, acting out our favorite programs and cartoons.

As daylight faded, the house became dark and we did not turn on the lights, nor did we notice that mother had arrived. Dad had a flashlight shining on the television cabinet and we were all having a great time when she came in wondering why no lights had been turned on.

Needless to say, mother was not too happy that dad allowed us in the area where she had forbidden us to play. But, after a quick remark about how she had spent so much time keeping us away from the television, she bit her tongue, shook her head and tried not to laugh at our silliness.

I remember many happy events of my childhood and the happiest of those memories include my dad.
Both of my parents have passed on and I miss them dearly. Growing up, we did not have riches, mostly the bare necessities and a television. But, we had lots of love and laughter. My parents did not leave us a great inheritance of material things that would be spent or would fade away.
